Wade in the Water (Harp Duet Version) – In 2021, Rhett Barnwell was commissioned by the Lowcountry Chapter of the American Harp Society to compose a Suite for harp ensemble based on spirituals from the Lowcountry area of South Carolina. The original work has 4 movements, with “Wade in the Water” being the final movement. It was premiered in Hilton Head, SC in 2022, and was made possible by a generous grant from the American Harp Society. Rhett lifted the 4th movement out and arranged it for harp duet. It begins and ends with a cadenza evocative of the Lowcountry, with its ancient oak trees and hanging Spanish moss, and the spiritual itself is set in a rhythmic, syncopated fashion. Part 1 is designed for an advanced intermediate harpist, while Part 2 is on more of an easy intermediate level. For lever or pedal harp, in the key of A minor, with a few easy lever/pedal changes. Approximately 3 – 4 minutes long.
